Chapter 6

A gentle breeze blew through an old, thick-trunked maple and rustled the leaves. The smell of cut grass and mulch wafted past Dennis as he leaned a shoulder against the rough bark and watched Joshua and Caleb kick a soccer ball around. He’d followed them to a park a half mile away. They’d taken a short cut through the woods, he making sure to keep his distance and stay just out of sight. The last thing he needed was for Joshua to see him, recognize the similarity (but they were so much more than just similar), and blow everything.

The park had been freshly mowed and stretched a good fifty yards in each direction. On one end was a collection of playground equipment, monkey bars, a slide, swings, merry-go-round. On the other end was a small pond rimmed with chest high cattails. A sign by the pond said “No Swimming, No boating, No fishing.”

Joshua kicked the ball to Caleb, who stopped it with his foot, repositioned himself, and passed it back. Joshua took a quick step to his right and stopped the ball easily. Dennis had tried soccer once, played for a county team when he was just nine. But playing sports was never his thing, not because he didn’t have the drive or motivation, but simply because he saw kicking a ball around a grassy field as waste of time. It was time he could use being more productive. He excelled in the classroom; his playing field was a library of textbooks. Besides, Dennis interacted better with numbers and theories than with people.

Joshua dribbled the ball toward Caleb who came at him. He faked left, Caleb went for it, then switched feet, changed direction, and went around his son to the right. Caleb laughed, turned, and tackled Joshua from behind.

The two continued to spar with the ball as Dennis watched, jealous of the relationship Joshua had with his son. Caleb should be Dennis’ son. He was so much more deserving to be a father. He could teach the boy so much, prepare him for a life of success and upward mobility. Joshua, the ball-kicking monkey, would ruin Caleb.
